This year, 61 Argentinian wines were submitted for the 8th MUNDUSvini International Wine Award in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany. Among 5,343 samples submitted, Argentina collected 17 gold medals and 16 silver medals.

MUNDUSvini, one of the largest world contests, was carried out at the end of the past month in Germany. The International Wine Award featured 280 specialized international judges (from 44 countries) who tasted over 5,300 wines from 41 countries. Already in its eighth edition, the most important international wine contest set a record as 8.5% more samples were submitted this year, compared to those of 2007.

The 8th MUNDUSvini International Wine Award was held in Neustadt an der Weinstraße, Germany. In this edition, Argentina was granted 33 awards, comprising 17 gold medals and 16 silver medals. These data about the results was provided to WineSur by Diego Eidelman, marketing director at MEININGER'S Wine Business International.

"Among the samples submitted, 1,389 (25.9%) were from Germany, followed by the traditional winemaking countries: Italia with 16.8%; Spain with 16% and France 10.2%. There were also remarkable representation from Portugal, Australia, Austria and South Africa. Even non-traditional exotic wine-producing countries such as Thailand, Israel and the Netherland were represented in the event. Most of the samples corresponded to red wines: 2,838 bottles (53.1%). White wines accounted for 35.4% of the samples (1,892 bottles). Moreover, there were 613 samples of other types of wine, such as sparkling, rosé, sherry, port and strong wines," the marketing director explained.

This contest has been endorsed by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) in Paris and holds a key place among the major international wine contests conducted in agreement with OIV regulations. In addition to the high degree of international tasting judges, comprised by 7 members, OIV standards require that no more than 45 wines be tasted daily. Moreover, the composition of different judging panels should seek a balance of experienced professionals of different areas of the industry, such as winery owners, winemakers, specialized journalists, sommeliers and specialized traders.

Moreover, according to OIV regulations, the number of awards granted must not exceed 30% of the samples submitted. The best wines receive "Grand Gold", "Gold" and "Silver" awards. Additional awards are granted to exceptional results such as "Importer of the year" and "Producer of the year". These distinctions have been officially endorsed by the European Union as indicators of quality and hence constitute a valuable marketing tool for producers and importers.
