Mi terruño
A wine from Mendoza succeeded over its Australian, French, Chilean, Italian and Spanish counterparts in the well-attended Chicago Wine Fair.

The acclaimed wine was Mi Terruño Reserva Malbec 2007, of bodega Mi Terruño, a family business owned by the Baigorria family and located in San Roque, Maipú. This winery's Malbec was awarded as the "best foreign wine" among thousands of samples submitted. It owes its triumph   to a key factor: it was the most successful wine among the event's attendants.

Gabriel Baigorria, the company's commercial director, commented that even though they have been making wine for two years, this year they started developing the brand commercially.

He also explained that the winery has different wine lines: Mi Terruño uvas (varietals), Mi terruño Reserva, Mi terruño Reserva Limitada, and Mi Terruño Maya cava, a Malbec that will be launched next year, meant to become the winery's icon wine.

The awarded wine

In Chicago, Mi Terruño Reserva Malbec 2007 was selected as the exhibition's best foreign wine. "This is a wine that rests in French oak barrels for eight months and is then stored in bottle for six more months. It is made with grapes from our own 40-year-old vineyard in Luján, in a limited production," the company's owner explained. Only 800 cases of this commended wine are produced.

Mi Terruño is a medium-size winery that produces 2 million liters. It is focused on quality wine production.

The fair

Six Argentinian wineries participated in the fair, as well as several Italian, Spanish, French, Chilean, South African and New Zealand wineries; but the wine that resulted most pleasant was this one. Why? "It was selected because it was the most accepted by the audience among all the wines that were tasted," Baigorria claimed.

The fair was open to the general public for two days and it was open for trade one more day. During these days, attendants were able to taste the wines and rate them in a scoring grid.

The success of Argentinian wine was also published by the prestigious Chicago Tribune. "This news suits us to a tee because we are starting wine exports to the United States, at a retail price of u$s16. Nevertheless, this wine is already being exported to Korea, Singapor and we are starting to sell it in the domestic market, especially through wine stores," Baigorria said.

This is the first time this winery participates in an international fair. At the national level, it has participated in the Hyatt Wine Awards, where its sample was awarded.
