Springtime in Adelaide, South Australia, just one of many reasons to attend the Eighth International Symposium on Grapevine Physiology and Biotechnology in November 2008. Hosted at the National Wine Centre of Australia in the centre of the city of Adelaide and within an hour’s drive of the premium wine regions of the Barossa and McLaren Vale, the organizing committee invites you to register for this pre-eminent event. Held only once every four years, the goal of the 2008 symposium is to showcase the latest research across the spectrum of disciplines from applied physiology through to cutting edge molecular biology. There will be a specific focus on where new techniques in biotechnology are being used to advance our understanding of vine physiology. The impact of climate change and related problems such as disease, drought and salinity on grapevine growth, development, yield and grape composition are dependent on gene x environment interactions manifested in the physiological responses of the vine. Discovering and understanding these plant responses will facilitate biotechnological solutions thereby enabling the industry to respond and successfully adapt to the challenges of the 21st century. Following the symposium research articles and reviews from plenary and selected speakers will be published in a special edition of the Australian Journal of Grape and Wine Research. This flagship publication of the Australian Society of Viticulture and Oenology (ASVO) has the highest impact factor for journals that specialize in vine and wine science. Delegates traveling to Australia to attend this event are encouraged to make the most of their visit and partake of the abundant fine food and wine on offer within South Australia and other regions and states. In particular the Symposium will include a full day escorted tour to the Southern Vales region including both the McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek wine grape growing areas. There is also an optional inclusion of a pre-Symposium tour from 20 – 23 November. This is being planned to include the wine regions of South Eastern Australia and the Sunraysia area providing an opportunity for delegates to experience a wide range of viticultural practices. Time will also be included to sample the epicurean delights of this part of Australia.
