Malbec al Mundo Contest
Malbec al Mundo Contest
The most important award of the “Malbec al Mundo 2008” contest went to Monte Cinco Malbec Oak, by Arturo Bertona. Moreover, the awards ceremony granted 46 gold medals and 41 silver medals. See the results in this article.

More than 500 guests, 292 samples, 35 judges, 46 gold medals, 41 silver medals and a Great Gold medal were some of the outstanding figures of the fifth edition of the "Malbec al Mundo" (Malbec to the World) international contest.

After four days of exhaustive tasting, the awards ceremony and luxury dinner were carried out on Friday November 14th at Don Miguel winery. In this occasion, the Great Gold medal was for Monte Cinco Malbec Oak 2005, of Arturo Bertona winery, located in Luján de Cuyo. In addition, 46 wines received gold medals and 41 silver medals were granted.

This international contest was attended by international wine experts, who were in charge of tasting the submitted samples at the Don Bosco Winemaking School in Mendoza. The samples included products from wineries in Mendoza, San Juan, Neuquén, among other provinces, as well as international submissions from Germany, Peru, Chile, Uruguay and Brazil. This year, the world contest was supervised by the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), represented by Uruguayan observer José María Lez, an international expert on the matter.

The objectives of the organizers -the Argentinian Association of Wine and Food Professionals (Apeaa) and the municipalities of Maipú and Luján de Cuyo- were to favor the promotion of superior quality Malbec wines, to stimulate their production and their rational consumption as a health factor, to show the public the different types of Malbec wines produced in different parts of the world, and to contribute to the expansion of wine culture and tourism.

Some of the awarded wineries commented that the contest is achieving increasing international acknowledgement with every new edition. Jorge Melero, Winemaking Chief at bodega Nieto Senetiner, commented that "every acknowledgement a wine obtains is celebrated and valued; more so when it comes to Malbec, as it represents a lot for us here in Mendoza. With our team, every day we work towards producing pleasant wines for our customers, and their acceptance is the best prize we can get. If we add to this an international award, we believe we have fulfilled our goals."

Melero added that "Malbec will keep spreading out around the world. It is a varietal with a life of its own, which has gained its status in the most important markets. Its growth may be spectacular if we maintain the quality standards we are currently offering."

Contest details

One of the characteristics of the contest was that the tasting was carried out following OIV regulations, which contemplate a variety of organization details, from glass cleaning to venue specifications in terms of proper temperature and lighting features. The submitted bottles were double-coded and the evaluation sheets were countersigned by a notary.

Furthermore, for the first time the contest was sponsored by the OIV, hence it was supervised by an appointed observer - Uruguay's José María Lez.

Besides Malbec, the contest evaluated beverages produced with Malbec, providing they had at least 50 per cent of this variety in their composition.
